The old and heavily discussed question-

Is Shader 3 support really essential for now and future gaming.

Anybody give any advice on the following options. My basic setup will consist of an Athlon XP venice core chip- 939 chipset- non SLI- 1GB Ram. CRT screen

A 6800GT chipset based card or-

An XL800 family chipset based card or-

Or wait for the new NVidia N70 card or-

Or wait until the N70 cards are out and take advantage of any possible price drop.

In the past I have been an Nvidia fan- My old GeForce GTS 2 was a reliable card.

In essence what difference will Shader 3 make as regards to my choice of card?

Any help appreciated!

if your going to run SLI get 2 6600GT's if you cant afford 6800's or if you want a single card an X800 XT

I would wait for the N70 core to come out then the prices for the cards should drop down.
the XL800 is a excellent card right now, since it performs like a 6800GT and priced $100 less.
