Which CPU Heatsink and Fan?
I'd be glad of any comments/opinion ref choosing cooling arrangement. Not a
modder.
Planning first upgrade using full tower, AMD XP Barton 2800 on Gigabyte
Board - GA-7N400 Pro2.
Been reading the reviews and now head is spinning - need a prod.
What I want is:-
Not too noisy
Not to pricey - but prepared to pay for the right solution.
Good quality
Fan speed to vary...I think? Do I need that? and if so should speed vary
with temp automatically or is manual adjustment ok?
At the mo starting to look at the Thermaltake range.
Any advise/opinion welcome.

I've got an Aero 7 Lite from www.coolermaster.com which has an adjustable
pot fitted to a blank plate in an empty PCI slot to vary the speed of the
fan.
You only need to vary the fan speed to keep the noise to a minimum. I'm
using an AthlonXP 1900+ and only have the fan running at 50% speed but the
drop in noise is considerable. Variable automatic adjustment is expensive
and not really necessary, the BIOS on the board you mention should
monitor the processor temperature so you can manually adjust the fan with
a bit of trial and error to the optimum speed.
Hope this is useful.

heres a recent experience..bought a thermaltake volcano 9..worked ok.. cpu
temp down by
9 degrees celcius..trouble is the fan sounds like a helicopter taking
off..i mean really noisy..
so took the fan off and replaced it with the fan from the original cpu
cooler(amd standard) which is smaller and quiet..result is that temps are
exactly the same....I reckon that unless you are overclocking to the extreme
then those big fans are a waste of time..seems that the copper core of the
heatsink does most of the work..

go to quietpc or something like that. They claim a 20 DBA headsink/fan that
runs up to 2.8 gightz.
