Where Have All The Newsgroups Gone

I used to be able to access Newsgroups through IE's outlook express. But all
my favorite newsgroups about Word, Excel, etc. have disappeared. I reset my
groups, even removed msnews.micrsoft.com and re-added it, but all my office
and many of my other groups have just disappeared. HELP!!!!

Microsoft is discontinuing newsgroups and transitioning users to Microsoft
forums. All public newsgroups will eventually be closed between June 1, 2010
and October 1, 2010. Microsoft will be closing newsgroups in a phased
approach, starting with the least active newsgroups and moving eventually to
more active ones throughout the course of the next six months.

See the other replies you've gotten, but note that you can still get
these newsgroups (with a diminished number of messages) from the
following servers (all free):

news.eternal-september.org
aioe.org
news.albasani.net

You're welcome. Glad to help.

Yes, I also think it was too bad. Microsoft made what I consider a bad
mistake.

I agree, Ken. Do you know if Microsoft's primary reason was financial
or was it too hard to control the responses in the newsgroups or was
there some other reason. I use the news.eternal-september.org server to
access the 98 general newsgroup.

Microsoft killed them and within another couple of months, they are
shutting down the server.

I know nothing more than anyone else's here about Microsoft's reason,
but I doubt very much if it was financial. I think it had to do with
control. There were probably lots of ways they could have exercised
more control, but as far as I'm concerned, they chose the poorest way.
