Where does Windows Update v5 store XP SP2 RC2?

Hi all,
I just recently accessed the windows update website and was prompted to install additional software in order for my XP system to utilize v5 of WindowsUpdate. After I installed it, it automatically started downloading XP-SP2-RC2. I couldn't cancel the download as it was deemed a 'Critical Update'. Now, SP2RC2 is already residing on my system, and since I have no wish to install a beta software, how do I tell WindowsUpdate that i do not wish to update the downloaded file?
On a related note, where does WindowsUpdate save the downloaded file? I would like to send the file over to my friend who is interested in SP2RC2 but he has no Internet access. If I can find the file, I would like to burn a copy on CD for him.
Thanks in advance for any input given!

dskw,

Are you saying that you were forced/tricked into downloading XP SP2?
That is HIGHLY unlikely unless you've just discovered a bug in the
V4 Windows Update site. The BITS update that you're referring to
will enable you to access the future V5 site.
If what you claim here is accurate then this should be forwarded to
the Windows Update team. Look in WUTemp for xpsp2.exe . The file is
over 200 MB. If it's much smaller than that then it is the "stub"
downloader for the entire package.
Please post back with further info....

Hi,
You could say that i was 'tricked'. After I updated my WindowsUpdate software, I was not informed at all that SP2 has began its download into my computer. Upon checking of my Update settings, I descovered that 'Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them' was selected. I have since changed this to 'Notify me but don't automatically download or install them'. It seems that when updating WindowsUpdate, they also changed my update settings, perhaps to make my system more 'secure'. I'm not sure if this is the right approach, especially for dial-up users. You mentioned forwarding this issue to the Windows Update team. Could you provide more info on how to do this? Also, WUTemp folder did not contain any files. A search of my disk drive did not indicate that 'xpsp2.exe' is residing on my system. I'm curently using XP Home. Thanks.

dskw,

I do not know the name of the stub that will later download XP SP2.
Since there is no xpsp2.exe on your system then just the stub was
downloaded . First enable " Show hidden files and folders " via
Folder Options in the Control Panel and then look for the stub in
the Program Files\Windows Update\V4 folder . It *should* be in a
temp folder in that location.

Have my system set to Notify also as some of the updates deemed
Critical are *not*, IMHO ... KB 831167 being one of those :
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=831167
The update is aimed at system's experiencing issues after doing
832894, MS04-004: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer.
If the system is not experiencing issues with secure (SSL) sites,
then why would it require this particular update ?

Also agree that a User's AU setting should *not* be changed without
notification.
To contact the support team for Windows Update start here and choose
Windows Update from the drop down window :
