Deleting the file 'wuweb.dll' from system32 seems to change the default
behaviour back to v4.

I agree, I don't see it in the dllcache either. I do see it in
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 . You may also need to delete
WUWebControl Class from C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files.

I am a bit confused as to why you want to go back to V4. V5 is going to
replace V4 once it is finished being developed and is currently working
flawlessly. V5 has all the features of V4 and then some. I highly
recommend sticking with Windows Update V5 and turning on Automatic
Updates ;)

My problem with it was that it kept insisting I download Service Pack 2 for
XP, which I did and ended up with a system that was unusable. So I un
installed it, but v5 seems to insist I have the pack, despite it not being
released yet. Odd

Well, technically, a beta build has been released to the public. The one
that is offered is the Release Candidate 2. It is not recommended to
install this on a production machine, but if you want to test it out or
just want to have the most up to date OS, then you can install it.

So I have two questions I guess. First, what build number shows up with
you right click on My Computer and click Properties? Does it say SP1 or
does it say SP2 v. 2149? Second, you said you downloaded and installed
it, but it messed up your computer and then you uninstalled it? How did
it mess up your computer and how did you uninstall it? Any install
issues should be reported to help with the final product to make sure
there are as few complications as possible ;)

I was testing SP2, and found a single bug which I couldn't get round:
Outlook express, combine and decode multi part binaries, the new version of
some 'fix' was causing it to drop a few bytes of data fron each segment.
Tested the same data from the same server in Agent and SP1 Outlook, all
fine. So your second question: I firstly un installed it via add / remove,
which mangled the system to barely usable, so then the system was rolled
back to a restore point
