Where Are The Internal HD-DVD Drives?

J

James

OK, the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray formats have been around for a while now.
So where are the internal HD-DVD drives that you can put into a 5.25
inch bay? Don't see them on Newegg, Amazon, etc. I can find a few
Blu-Ray only drives, but no combo HD-DVD / Blu-Ray drives. I figured
by now internal drives would be common and below $200. What gives?

LG's announced one,the GGW-H10N, which I see offered for sale for
between $800 and $1200, but I don't think anybody actually has any for
sale.

I remember reading in a Popular Science that the HDDVD for the Xbox
360 can be put into a PC. Thats only $179 for a HiDef player.

The OP was asking for a combo Blu-Ray/HD-DVD burner.

Around here (Vancouver) they're about $20.00 each. About $23.00 for a
single 25GB Blu-ray disc.

It was a while after single-format DVD burners were out before the +/-
burners appeared. I'm pretty sure at this rate you'll be able to get an
HD/Ray burner for $150 or so within 18-24 months.

Lots of people answer questions without fully reading the question. Some
even go so far as to make up an entirely different question to answer in
place of the original question. Welcome to Usenet.

In this case, he was probably replying to the subject line, since it
doesn't mention Blu-Ray.

That's why the best filter on USENET is Ignore SubThread. Being able
to ignore a thread branch does wonders.

Another standard here is to use a right angle bar for quoting.

Who's standard might that be? It's been quite common for people to use a
variety of characters for quoting since at least as far back as 1986.

There is the LG GGC-H20L HD DVD / BD player that comes with some form of
Power DVD Ultra for around 300.00.

It maybe hard to find any place that actually has stock on this player as
it's selling out quickly.

Thanks for the link. This lead to lots of googling and basically from
what I can tell these drives are on the bleeding edge, which is why
they are hard to find. LG has two new models

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/ggw_h20li/

I found some info that suggested that PCs using BR and HD-DVD drives
have some audio decoding issues. Guess I'll wait until the next gen of
stuff to come out... maybe 2008? I really thought the manufacturers
would be farther along than this. All I want to do is stick a BR or HD-
DVD disc into a computer and play it. Geez!

At 300.00 for HD DVD / BD and software it's the least expensive way to have
both formats. As for various problems, sound being one you can thank the
poor state of the software for the issues, but with trying to please
Holywood it's no wonder software development is slow. Still considering how
new the technology is this seems pretty cheap for so early in the life
cycle.

The HP Pavilion M9060N has a combo drive. Not sure what brand it is under
the covers.
