A friend just rang me with a problem!

He can't get on the internet amd he keeps getting asked for:

lyeaqbstckgr.dll

Does this mean anything to any of you?

(FWIW my first reaction was *virus*, it does not exist on my computer)

Nonsense names usually indicate virus/worm/trojan (take your pick).
However, name morphing has been noted in some of the new adware/malware.
Delete/rename the existing file and it automatically recreates itself.

Have your friend contact their ISP. I have seen some really strange
filenames (not this one though). May be it's part of their package and may
be on the CD provided, if any. Good tech support can help.
