Slow Shutdowns

I am wondering if anyone has run across this problem at some point. It
really has a friend stumped.

His computer is taking a very long time to shut down. He says he is
not just talking about from the time when the pop-up screen comes on
that gives you the choice of restart, standby or turn off, which also
takes a long time from that point on, but also the time it takes to
get to that screen when you hit the Start in the lower left hand
corner and select shut down computer. It takes a good 3 minutes to
get to the pop-up shut down screen and probably just as long for it to
turn completely off.

If he restarts the computer and do the shut down routine, it's almost
instant, but the longer the computer is on the longer it takes until
it maxes out around 3 minutes for both parts of the shut down.
He has watched the task manager and just left the computer sit and
idle for an hour or more and it still does it. He has even watched
the task manager to see if any programs were appearing/running during
a shut down and hasn't seen a thing.

He says he can't find anything on the internet pertaining to this.
Searching slow shut downs on the internet pertain to only the time
after the actual shut down begins and not the time preceding part.

Thanks

Hi Gecko

Despite what you are saying I would guess that this is a program which may
be running and causing a slow shut down, take for example AVG anti-virus or
Windows Defender if you have your machine powered up long enough for the
scans to start it will take much longer for your machine to shut down.

I would troubleshoot this by running msconfig from start/run and untick all
of the programs from the startup tab, reboot the machine leave it running for
a while and then trying to shut it down again, if this works go back to
msconfig and gradually start putting the ticks back in the boxes and
restarting to see if you can find the culprit. Other reasons for this maybe
catalogers/indexers running. Is the machine of a decent spec, plenty of free
hard disk space and RAM?

Has the Windows XP SP3 update been installed?

If the SP3 update has not been installed this suggestion may help.
