What is the proper way to reboot pc when it freezes?

Greetings one and all.......I just upgraded hubby's pc to WinXP Home Edition
from WinME and his pc froze while gaming(Asheron's Call). Not knowing a lot
about pcs, he did the 3 finger salute (CTL/ALT/Delete) to see what was not
responding (just like I always had him do with ME) and he got this totally
different window.....something about logging off his Windows User Account
name. This was new to me and I just don't know the proper thing for him to
do when this happens.

Now, I could spend a year searching these newsgroups for the correct
proceedure but I figured it would be easier to just ask:

When he is online gaming and his game stops responding, what exactly does he
do? How does he do it?(Remember, he am a greenhorn when it comes to pcs and I
am new to XP, please)

If that doesn't work and:

When he is online gaming and his pc totally locks up/freezes, what exactly
is the proper way to get back to the game? Does he have to log off his
Windows User account and how does he do that or does he have to totally
reboot the pc and start over and what is the proper way to do reboot?

Thank you all so very much for any help and info you can give me.........

PS.......Can anyone tell me just what is happening when his game hangs up or
his pc freezes. I know you can't give me the exact reason, as that could be
anything, but does a pc hang or freeze because the system becomes unstable or
what? Is that there is too much information for it to read and becomes
overwhelmed and just quits working? Maybe if I knew what was happening I
could do or not do something to stop this problem.

OS: WinXP Home Edition
PC: Dell Dimension 8200 P4 1.3 256 Ram
