What happened to standby.

I am running Windows XP (on HP pavilion 523a). For the past 3 years I have
regulary used standby mode either by clicking the start menu, shutdown,
standby or just pressing the standby button on the keyboard. All of a sudden
the standby option on the shutdown window has been greyed out, the keyboard
button does not work and when I looked in the power settings there isn't even
an option for standby. I have made no changes to my system (unless the kids
did it). I have tried to use the system restore function and it is not
working either, won't let me restore to any point. Everything else seems to
be working fine. Any help much appreciated.

Hi Paul,

This is a device driver problem, especially if you're using a generic video
driver. The following links should help you troubleshoot the problem:
So you've lost (or never had) Standby and/or Hibernate?

Ramesh has provided you with excellent solutions for your Stand-by troubles.
So I will focus on your System Restore problem. If you cannot restore to
earlier points then you probably have a corrupt restore point. The first I
would do is launch the Disk Cleanup utilty. The Disk Cleanup utilty is
located on your Start Menu (Start > All Programs > Accessories > System
Tools > Disk Cleanup). When Disk Clenup has opened then click on the "More
Options" tab and select "Clean up" System restore button. This will purge
all but one System Restore point. Now try System Restore and restore to an
earlier point. If System Restore fails again the you will need to purge the
remaining restore point. To perform this action you would go to the Control
Panel > System Properties > select the "System Restore" tab and turn off
System Restore. Reboot the computer and then Enable System restore in the
System Properties. Create a new restore point and test the newly created
restore point. System Restore should be functioning correctly now. If you
would like to learn more about System Restore then please visit Bert
Kinney's Web site which focuses on System Restore.
