Welcome screen hangs (Help!)

The blue screen with XP logo hangs, and I never get to
the next screen which normally has the users names to
click on and start a session, if you know what I mean.

This is XP home edition. The mouse still moves,
networking also works because I can connect to a share
directory on this machine from another PC on my network.

Any suggestions? Safe mode gets to the same screen, Last
known good config doesn't do anything either.
I don't have the XP disk since it was pre-installed on
the laptop.

I have exactly the same problem for the second time. The first time I used the system recovery disks that came with the laptop, but lost all my data. This time I need to keep that data but can not access it. I downloaded the XP System Recovery file and can access the c: but access is denied to my doc's. ANYONE!!!

Hey, what is this XP System Recovery file, and where did
you download it? You used it on another machine to access
your C: drive? I can only get to the shared directory
(Shareddocs) but really need to get to My documents -
which ofcourse was not shared. If anyone knows of a way
to take ownership of the entire disk a shared folder is
on, that would work for me, I guess.
But I would really prefer to just LOG IN :-(

OK, I was able to install a new copy of XP (pro this
time) in another directory - on the same partition
against setup's advice - but it worked, and I am able to
access all my files on the disk. So I have saved them on
another machine and am now contemplating what to do with
the problem-machine. It works fine with the new
installation of XP, but obviously, there is the old copy
of the OS still sitting on the harddrive taking up space.

There are some settings and certificates I use for
banking and banking apps setup under the "old windows"
and I have not been able to reinstall / move them to the
new version, at least not yet. Whenever that is done I
think I'll reinstall the machine with the original
Toshiba disks.

So there you have it - install another copy of the OS in
a different directory and save your data.

Hope this works for you too.
