XP Pro Hangs on Blue XP Logo Screen

My system is hanging on the Blue XP Logo Screen at startup. I can get into
Safe mode, but no matter what option I try, including command prompt, it
still hangs on the blue logo screen. I tried going back to the XP install
disk (all I have are upgrades), but the system won't boot to those disk's.

Ideas??

Ran into this the other day. Turned out to be, in that case, an external
USB hard disk that had stopped responding (the drive works, it is actually
the port on the system that's the problem).

The system halted at the XP screen because it could not get past teh failed
hard drive. Unplugging the drive solved the problem nicely.

Tried this, but it still doesn't work... The screen it freezes on is the
light blue screen that is the screen that you normally see the logon icons...

Thanks for the help though.

Follow-up. I was able to get the drive running in an external USB box
connected to a Laptop that is also running XP Pro. Now, if I only knew
what was missing..., I could copy it from the Laptop...
