My system hangs when the blue screen with the windows xp logo appears on
screen. It even does this in safe mode. Any ideas?

I'd do F-8 Function key selective bootup and try hard to use Last Known Good.

I, too, have this same problem and have found no solution that works. I have
tried safe mode, last known, returned to bios default settings and nothing
has worked. My daughter has plugged in her iPod to my laptop and I don't
know if this created a hardware or registry issue, but I never had the
problem before. Any other ideas?

My system is now doing the same thing. It boots to the Microsoft XP logo
page and stops there even in safe mode. One interesting fact is that I can
connect to the computer through another computer on the home network.
Unfortunately, I can only view and change some files in this way.

It is as if all is working yet this blue logo screen stays put and keeps the
full boot from completing. I have tried booting to last successful boot by
using F8 etc.

Any other ideas?

As for the potential culprit, I had just installed Microsoft’s new Natural
Keyboard 4000. I have disconnected it, but because I can’t get to the
desktop I can’t remove the software and drivers.

Boot from the Windows XP CD and perform a repair install. Do NOT enter the
recovery console.

Thanks for your suggestions. I am working now; however, I followed a
different path.

I removed all superfluous hardware, including the new keyboard, and then I
installed a backup of my system from a few weeks ago. Things worked fine
UNTIL the machine loaded the last few Microsoft security updates. I was
right back to where I started. The machine was booting, yet I could not get
to a desktop because of the blue Microsoft Windows XP logo screen. So, it
was not a hardware problem, at least not some new hardware.

I up dated drivers reloaded everything and let Microsoft install updates;
same result, could not get to desktop even in safe mode.

Started over once again, attached keyboard, and denied the installation of
last security updates, and all is working fine.
