I have this old OEM Compaq V5000 laptop and I purchased windows Xp Sp2 long
time back for it. Recently when I start my system , the balck screen comes
with option of running windows in safe mode, safe mode with networking and
last known configration any option clicked will lead to a windows logo and
for a fraction of second i get a blue screen then it shuts down , then again
reboots itself to black screen. i have tried windows to repair / reinstall
its loading all the files but at the end saying " windows cant find your hard
drive check the power supply or the driver .
Please help.

Please post a copy of the Stop Error report.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Keep pressing the F8
key during Start-Up and select option - Disable automatic restart on
system failure.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

Hope this helps.

That's unclear. Do you mean you purchased a Windows XP with SP2
installation CD?! Didn't your Compaq already come with a license to run
XP (and an accompanying disk)? Or did you perhaps upgrade from XP Home
(or Windows 2000, I suppose) to XP Pro? Or are you just talking about
the Service Pack 2 CD? If it's an XP installation CD, is it Retail or
OEM?

Did you try selecting "Disable automatic restart on system failure"?

Have you performed any hard drive diagnostics? There are bootable CDs
that will let you do this. SeaTools for DOS is one such CD:
