How can I "freeze" this Blue Screen? I have tried all modes, safe mode, safe
mode with command prompt......ect. The splash screen works hard to load, but
never does....then the quick blue screen. Again, is there a way to "freeze"
this blue screen so I can read what it is telling me.

Press F8 during startup and select to disable auto reboot on error.

Have you added anything either software or hardware.

The answer to your question is yes - you can freeze/capture the
screen, but to do so requires you to boot into some mode to make the
modifications to do so.

What do you think happened to bring on this condition? "It was
working fine until ______". (fill in the blank)

Could it be some hardware change, power interruption, ungraceful
shutdown, interrupted/aborted restart, new software installations,
updates, service packs, etc.

If you made any hardware modifications (video, network, sound, memory,
storage, etc.) can remove them temporarily to see if you can at least
boot into some mode to allow additional troubleshooting?

If you can boot into the Recovery Console you can perform some basic
diagnostics.

Do you have or can you get your hands on a bootable XP installation
CD?

Does your system have Recovery Console as a boot option (consider
adding it after you fix this if not).

If no, you can create a bootable Recovery Console CD where you can
perform basic diagnostics.

Thanks, F8 takes me back to the screen which asked how I want to boot.
start windows normally, start in safe mode, start with command prompt. and
start with some kind of networking (I am not on a network). Brief history: I
had a ati 9800 pro which has been going bad for months now. I would get only
half of a screen, the right side got really bad, couldn't even see it. Right
before I could not read my monitor at all, the last visible screen I could
see was my desktop, barley
visible, then windows gave me some kind of message, which I could not read.
That was the last time the computer worked. I have replaced the card, now I
can see my monitor, but everytime I start the computer, the splash screen
works hard to start, but I get taken back to the black screen with white
letters: the start modes listed above. I think I'm in a bad situation, right?
Get back with me please and thanks for your help.

Thanks for getting back with me. After the splash screen works hard to start,
I am taken to a black screen with white letters: how I want to boot, windows
normally, last know config, safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, and
with some king of networks (I am not on a network). History: I had a ati 9800
pro which has been going bad for quite awhile. The right side of the screen
had vertical lines, and eventually I could not read the right side of the
monitor all. Right before the monitor was just full of colors (could not read
anything), the last visible screen I could see was my desktop, hardly
visible, and I got some kind of error message which I could not read. That
was the last screen I could see. I have replaced this card and CAN NOW SEE MY
MONITOR. When I boot the splash screen comes up, will not boot and am taken
to the "Mode Screen" asking me what I want to do.
I have a Dell Demension 8300, you can use F2 and F12, F2 takes you to the
mode screen, F12 is for settings. The ati 9800 pro's program and drivers are
still loaded, and the new card's drivers are not yet loaded from its CD.
Sounds like I'm in real trouble here. Yeah, I have the windows xp pro disk. I
did place it in, but it will not come up, so I quess a reinstallation is not
possible. Also, the last time I put the xp disk in, it said, install could
not continue because I was using a "newer version".
I took the computer to a repair shop years ago, was having problems, and the
repair shop, I THINK, used there copy to reinstall windows. So, I might not
be able to use my retail CD at all. I have SP3 installed on my Dell. I am
using a computer some one gave me. I have dial up w/ aol.

There is an option to "Disable automatic restart on failure", this is what
you needed to select.

On the menu screen there is also an option to start in VGA mode, use this
and uninstall the video drivers for the old card and then install drivers
for the new card.

I've just been through a similar problem with a DELL Dimension 4400, and
one of the issues was the video card drivers. So this is very fresh in
my mind - but I am not a Windows expert.

If you can boot into Safe Mode (which isn't always easy on a DELL
certainly not on mine) then you can update the new graphics drivers from
the new graphics card CD or anywhere else you want to put them.

Don't let Windows or Windows Update choose the graphics drivers - I let
it update my card and got a boot failure as a result - and could only
rescue the situation by going into Safe Mode. I then used the official
Dell provided drivers for the installed card - in your case - it would
be the 3rd party drivers for the new card. But you can also try the Dell
site and see if they have specific drivers for your model of the card,
and if they do, I would be inclined to use them unless they were a lot
older.

It depends on your BIOS but if you are getting those different choices
at Bootup, is one of them for Safe Mode? Because if it is, go for it,
and try updating your graphics card that way - logon to the default
admin account (it may have no password set which is the default so don't
despair) - then Control Panel - and Display - Settings - Advanced -
Adapter - Properties - Driver - Update driver - and then use the
navigate option to point to where you have your graphics card driver -
DONT let Windows choose.

I finally got the "blue screen" to freeze. It had suggestions, I'm sure you
know them. And here was the error messages:
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
Stop: 0x000000ED (0x81EE4D98, 0xC0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
Does this tell us anything. I'm running xp pro. I will try to go into the
VGA mode and unstill the ati 9800 drivers and instll the new cards drivers of
the CD which came with it. Thanks for your help, Steve ([email protected])

I finally got into the blue screen: Error Codes:
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
Stop: 0x000000ED (ox81EE4D98, 0xC0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
Will this help? Also, can I go into the VGA mode, unstall ati drivers and
then use the CD with my new card to load the new cards drivers?
Thanks, Steve ([email protected])

Or Safe Mode? Can I install the CD which came with my new card and load its

During startup POST (Power On Self Test), you can use your PAUSE/BREAK key
to pause display of messages (and stop action) while you write down complete
messages, including error codes, and then press CTRL+Pause to resume. After
Windows starts to load, you can also use Pause, but press ENTER to resume.

You're welcome. --Richard
