Windows XP SP2 feezes at XP screen on boot

I have a machine in our office that is not booting this morning. The user
merely shut down last night...no notice of anything strange.

Now, when the sstem boot...it freezes and turns the screen a light blue
shade on the XP splash screen...the one with the little status bar. The bar
gets two bubbles in and it freezes. When it turns this bluish color...the
splash screen and progress bar still shows but the bar has stopped.

I can boot into safe mode.

Anyone have any clue what this could be?

only last week i seen a similar case with a computer (a public one) which was
due to a bad virus. reformatting was the only solution.
