Weird problem with HP F4140 All-in-one printer and XP

Hi,

I just picked up an HP F4140 to use with an XP (SP2) system I have.

Initially I had a lot of trouble installing all the software that
comes with it - eventually I had to go to HP's site, then download and
run a registry protection modification utility they have so that their
installation could write some values into the registry.

After that, the software seemed to install OK, and the printer seems
to print fine, BUT...

I cannot get the printer to stay shut off (don't get that look on your
face, I realize how weird that sounds). I'll power off the printer,
then later I'll hear it making mechanical noises like it's cleaning
the ink cartridges, I'll walk up to it to see what is going on, and it
will be powered on again.

The only way I can seem to get it to stay shut off is if I unplug the
power cable. A little inconvenient.

Anyone have an idea what is going on?

Thanks.

I'd ask HP if I were you, most folks these days don't turn their PCs or
printers off at all, so it might be designed to stay on all the time.

Many of HP printers do not really turn off when you hit the power button.

That way they can "Wake Up" when you print.

Believe it or not, this is beginning to look like a "spikey" AC
problem.

Thanks for your replies.
