WD can't find upgrades and program will not uninstall

Hi,

I've been coming to this form for a couple of momths now to download
signature updates for WD from Engel's posts. Thank you, Engel! And maybe a
clear and present llink to signature files from the Defender homepage would
also save people loads of time.

Anyway, my reason for being here is because WD simply cannot locate updates.
It checks manually, and I also force it to check manually whenever I see the
exclamation mark on the Taskbar icon, but it always comes back with "no new
definition files or updates are avialable".

As a last resort I decided to uninstall and reinstall WD only to find that
the program will not uninstall either. Instead I receive a diaolog box
telling me that "the feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM...that is
not available". Go figure.

Has anyone got any ideas? Much appreciated.

Hello iNSiPiD,

Sorry I'm not a MVP, but you can try, If you have the CD for "Back up Dell
Installed programs", you could install this from the original CD, and, if you
really have no use for it, you can then uninstall it. Going through this
cycle will remove the problem.

Alternatively, you can get the Windows Installer Cleanup tool:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Install this, run it, and look for something which is the application
represented by the prompt you are seeing. You can then remove the installer
information for this app, and that will remove the message.

I would then uninstall the cleanup tool--it shouldn't be needed on any
routine basis, and there's some risk to leaving it around.

Just for the record. What is the version of Windows Defender? Please go to
Help, about, and post the the three version numbers there.

I,m sure more knowledgable people (MPVs) will be along soon.

For the benefit of the community reading this post, please rate the pºst.

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

Hi,
I have the same problem as well on one of my computers and I would like to
provide the version information. The one that can't find updates in WD is
able to get updates by manually going to Windows Update or Microsoft Update,
but can't automatically or manually update from within Windows defender. The
automatic Windows updates do not update Windows defender.

It is:
Windows Defender Version 1.1.1593.0
Engine Version 1.1.2204.0
My other computer is able to automatically update within Windows Defender.
It is the same Windows Defender version and the same engine version. It just
has a newer definition version because I haven't yet gone to Windows update
to update it to the latest yet.
Thanks a bunch.

Hi Engel,

The Windows Installer Cleaner just sounds too risky.

FYI, if I try to view About Windows Defender I get the following error
message followed by a blank page.

"Windows Defender encountered an error: 0x80070002. The system cannot find
the file specified."

I'll attempt uninstalling using the Dell CD instead.

Cheers!

Hi Engel,

The Dell CD didn't contain the Defender MSI so I downloaded the latest
version and tried using that, only to be told that it was a more recent
version.

Having tried everything else, I went back to your earlier suggestion of
using the Windows Installer Cleanup tool. Well, despite all my well-justified
fears, it worked like a treat.

I removed the Windows Defender entry, ran the newly downloaded
WindowsDefender.msi and it installed without a hitch. AND it successfully
downloaded the latest pattern engine and definition files.

You may not be an MVP but you certainly provided the solution (and a very
handy tool for future use with similar issues).

Maybe I should consider changing my signature? ;)
