W2K Server Faxing stops

Bruce R

On a W2K server box with all the latest patches and SP I
have 2 modems for faxing about 200-300 invoices nightly.

Sometimes faxing stops, MMC shows both devices available,
fax service is still running and nothing in the event
log. Doing a restart on the service resumes faxing.

Other times a message box saying a modem is unplugged
appears and event ID's 8226, 8225 and an occasional 8218
are tied to it. Again just restarting the service sets
things normal and faxing resumes.

The ID 8218 is about a failed incoming fax. We use the
faxes for outgoing only but the fax service would not use
both devices or even one reliably unless we set both to
recieve. We tried different modems, serial and USB, have
all the latest drivers but it keeps stopping.

Anyone have any suggestions? This was originally on a
high availability W2K Advanced Server box with USB modems
and fail over capability but moved it to this box just
tinkering to get things working.

Thx
Bruce R.

Thanks for the reply, however I had already installed the patch for the faxt30.dll and 3 weeks ago we had the phone company in to test, and on one line fix, the lines. And again last week I called them in again, thinking that was the problem, but the lines checked out OK. Both lines are POTS direct to the phone company switch

Since these lines are for outgoing only is there a patch, upgrade or something that would allow me to turn off the receive option? As you know, mutliple modems for sending will not work properly unless receive is turned on and this appears to cause some of the problems. When one of the error codes is logged it also sets that device to receive "no" which then screws up sending on both devices

Thank you

Bruce, I think I cannot help any more unless I have more information. Let us
know if you are OK to turn on the logging and send us back the log files.
This requires some registry changes to be done. If you are fine with this,
Russ (our MVP) will send the instructions to you and you can send him the
log files for our analysis.

I would advise you to think seriously about upgrading to Windows Server
2003.
BTW, did you try using modems of different manufacturer. I think you did,
but I just want to confirm.
