W2k pro reboots on Shutdown

Hi.. At wit's end. When selecting "Shutdown", my pc is
now rebooting (forcing me to cut pwr in order to shut down
pc). All happened since installing SP4. Ran Adware,
CWShredder and NIS - all clean. Looked at EventViewer
(System) and seeing reboot from bugcheck:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck
was: 0x000000d1 (0xbfc24ec0, 0x00000002, 0x00000000,
0xbfc24ec0). Microsoft Windows 2000 [v15.2195]. A dump was
saved in: C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini120403-02.dmp.

I have to figure out how to convert the dump to readable
format. I need some suggestions.... (btw: MS KB has
article on0x000000d1, but no good link to the "fixit"
file).

Hi Anne,

I had a similar problem that was remedied by discovering a
known bug in my Intel Motherboard. They fixed the problem
free of charge by replacing the mother board. My problem
included rare, intermittent, spontaneous re-boots. The
problem of not actually shutting off without disconnecting
from the power source was nearly constant.

Hope this helps,
Ben Vaughn

Hi, Anne.

The default setting in Win2K/XP for "what to do on System failure" is to
"Automatically restart". This fixes many problems since, as we know, a
simple reboot is often the cure. But when it doesn't work, we are left with
no easy way to figure out the problem. My recommendation is to change this
default setting. I'm using WinXP, so the steps may be slightly different,
but you can probably figure it out from this: Go to System Properties |
Advanced | Startup and Recovery Settings. Under System Failure, UNcheck
Automatically restart.

Next time, instead of rebooting, your computer should present a BSOD (Blue
Screen of Death) full of cryptic codes. You'll still have to reboot - by
pressing the Reset button - but you'll have plenty of time to copy down
those codes to post here if you can't figure them out yourself.

Also, be sure to check Jim Eshelman's page. It's for WinXP, but it should
work for Win2K, too:
