W2k fully updated icon question

James

It seems some of my icons have been changed to the icons for other apps.
At one time I know the routine in W98se but that was some time back
and I have not had this problem with W2k until recently. Not that it
causes a problem since I have the extensions visible but it is a bit
annoying.

If anyone has the answer I would appreciate it.

Control Panel|Display|Appearance|Advanced and try changing the icon size by
one, apply changes, then go back in and change the size back. This should
cause the operating system to rebuild the shelliconcache file which may be
in a corrupted state.

No change on the desktop but that was not where the problem was located.
The problem was with Windows Explorer. It is there that a Fineprint
icon, with a flame appearance, was changed to a .pdf icon, in a
semi-rectangular redish icon with PDF in white letters inside the icon.
PDF files have an icon that has taken on the generic Windows icon
appearance with the flag in the center of the rectangular icon.

Sounds like the file association has been changed. For example from a
command prompt;

assoc .txt
should return with
..txt=txtFile

ftype txtfile
should return with
txtfile=%SystemRoot%\system32\NOTEPAD.EXE %1

Using your example works for both sections. Using the assoc portion
works with the .fp & .pdf extensions but when I use ftype I get back:
Filetype 'fineprint' not found or no open command associated with it.
For the .pdf files it give me:
Filetype 'acroexchange' not found or no open command associated with it.

Both file types open properly in their respective apps when double
clicked in Win. Explorer. The icon error is only viewed in Win Explorer
Explorer.
