W2000 Backup utility "The Fixed media is full"

when backing up my C drive to my D drive I get an errro
message " The fixed media is full" It always occurs when
4,294,939.648 bytes have been copied. Its an 18GB Scsi
drive with 11GB of free space. Tried this two days in a
row (with two different destitation file name) and have
two files out there the same size? Have SP4 installed.
also ran a defrag and Chkdsk /s f

Any help woould be appreciated
