VLC for radio on dial-up?

If you are using VLC to listen to radio on the internet over a dial-up
connection (~48K) (no DSL available here) how does it work? Better than
the MS Media Player? I have a copy but haven't installed it or tried it.
I am reluctant to add software to a system that is working well. I use
the MP and after a few minutes to a half hour the buffering gets too
choppy to listen to - a few seconds of audio, a few seconds of
buffering, continuously. I then have to close MP and restart it - a slow
process. I use it to listen to BBC world news for maybe an hour in the
morning. Does VLC work any better or am I doomed because of my slow
dial-up connection? Back to local NPR news on the radio? I've tried
various buffering settings in MP - default, 15 sec, 30 sec, and 60 sec.
They all work badly.

TIA

It depends on what type of content you wish to recieve. I generally
note that WMV content works best for me since it is the smallest in
size.
