manual dial-up connection disabled

When I try to mannually set up a dial-up connection in XP
the radio button is disabled for that feature. I have a
modem connected. Device manager says it is working
properly. I did a query and it was ok. Reinstalled modem
drivers and put modem in a different COM port. NOTE: The
modem and internet connection had been working fine until
a few days ago for no known reason

Mitch,

I am an ISP with a new customer with exactly the same
problem. He previously had a home LAN with a high-speed
connection. I cannot find any reference in Microsoft
Support to why this radio button is disabled. If I find
out anything, I will post a reply here.

One of my customers had the same problem. Thanks to
annoyances.org, I have an answer which worked for my
customer. Go to this post and follow the instructions by
XPAdvisor:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1067381114

When he says "Backup the rasman key," I believe he means
to select RasMan in the left part of the window and select
Export Registry File... from the Registry pull-down menu.

This solution involves editing the registry, so proceed
with care.

Ken,

We found the workaround in your Knowledge Base Article at
annoyances.org and it worked. However, your Knowledge Base
Article explains what caused the problem. The customer
bought the computer with XP Home Edition, installed
Service Pack 1, then installed XP Professional on top. I
will send this article to him because it says he needs to
reinstall Service Pack 1.

Thanks for finding this article. I didn't find it,
probably because I was searching on "dial-up connections"
instead of "networking connections."
