Vista X32 or X64?

Hi,
Is there a web site to see if I have the compatibility to run the 64 bit RC-1 or does anyone know from my specs down the
bottom of this message?
I believe they do meet what is needed for the 64 bit .
I have all 32 bit applications but from what I herd the 64 bit is the way to go.

Thanks,
Than I would be better off with the x64 Right? Don't know the difference in how it will run and what benefits there are?

Hi,

x64 takes full advantage of the processor and memory capacities, and in a
general way is faster than x86 (the 32-bit version) because of this added
capacity. However, many hardware makers do not yet offer device drivers for
the 64-bit version, so checking for these ahead of time will save you a lot
of headaches. Asus is fairly good about providing drivers for onboard
devices, but any added peripherals should be checked on if you need them to
work. Most modern 32-bit applications will run in the 64-bit environment
without issue, but older 16-bit ones will not, so if you have some older
legacy software you like, be aware that it is not going to work under x64.

Hi Rick,

Aren't the device drivers included in x64 like they are in x86?
I ran the upgrade advisor and I should be all set except of one Intel driver Quick Resume Technology Driver.

You would be better off with x64 version of Vista RC1? Perhaps. The push is
on for x64 computing. For many people all that means is that email is now
handled by a 64 bit app rather than a 32 bit one.

Is there even one 64-bit game yet? AMD provides screenshots for
"Dreadnaught" where supposedly the picture is brighter with more sparks in
the 64-bit version. I'd venture that the quality of the game graphics has
more to do with the video card than the CPU. Just because they added sparks
in the 64-bit version doesn't mean they couldn't have in the 32-bit! And
then there's the screenshots of the 32-bit version of the demo which are
suspiciously dark. Just because it was run on a 32-bit processor doesn't
make the graphics lighter or darker. Anyway video cards interface their
memory (typically) at 256-bits making even 64-bits of a processor seem a bit
puny.

As a matter of fact 64-bits can slow things down when it's not needed. When
there's a miss, the whole cache has to be flushed with all those giant
64-bit instructions. Intergers take up more space and so on .. .. however,
this is not to say NASA can't make full and better use of a 64-bit CPU
because it can .. and hey, perhaps, someday, there might be a game out there
that actully performs better with a 64-bit CPU.

What do you mean by better off? Vista is still a pre-release OS and you
should not rely on it for your primary computer. It is available now for
evaluation and testing only. The real question is would MS be better off if
you tested x64 and reported issues? The answer is yes. 95% of the Vista
installations are x86 so any contribution you can make to testing x64 would
be good.

Hi,

There are a ton of drivers included in x64, but you may still find that not
every device on your system has a driver, which is why you should check
before installing.

Hi Rick,
How do I find out before I install which ones I need. Is there a Upgrade Vista Advisor for x64?

No, there isn't a definitive list. If anything, install it on a second
volume or hard drive as a test run.

Thanks Rick,
I got another problem, I just checked my order for the Vista RC1 and I THINK? I ordered the x86 my mistake. I am not
sure cause the order doesn't say which version I ordered.

If you ordered the DVD from Microsoft, you will get both the 32-bit and
64-bit versions of RC1 Build 5600 --- eventually.

And if it's as inefficient as the TAD on XP X-64, we will receive them after
RTM when it is legally unuseable.

Thanks, I didn't know that.
One think that I think needs improvement is the Upgrade Advisor should be for both programs and I thought this was the
case.
I do like to test but not going around finding drivers.
