Hi,
Since you don't have to install Agent 4.0 I tried to copy it from my XP and put it in the Programs Files of RC1 but
when I went to use it refused to give me access. This is a big file 490 MB that has all my newsgroups and email in it so
I just can't do a clean install.Is there a way I can do this?

I just tried both ways :/
Same here (Not responding) .
I also turned off e-mail on the Installed vs Copied version

Agent 4.0.1071

AMD XP 2600+
1.5G
Nvidia FX 5200

Hi Steve,
Well I am confused on this and I need this program to work if I am going to buy Vista. Will have to wait for a fix on
this I guess?

I use a much older version of Agent (1.92/32.576) and the only way to
get it to work with Vista was to run it as administrator. I think
Vista doesn't like something about the use of .dat files.

The copied version trial, uses (ini, dat, idx) files in my user
directory (started with shortcut, just like I use XP except for path
names). Since there is no error message, I have no clue what is
barfing all over my desktop :^)

Hi Again,
I guess what your saying you use Agent 1.92 to run all your files?
Where can I get 1.92 so I can try to run it with my 4.0 data? I went to there site but the only other one they had is
Agent 3.3 and I know that won't work.

I had a similar problem when I first tried to install 40tude Dialog by
copying the entire folder across from XP in the same way you did with
Agent.

After a lot of head scratching I found that it's the virtualization
feature of Vista's UAC which is causing the problem. A new installation
of Dialog showed that the data files for Dialog were not being placed
in the expected directory (c:/Program Files/Dialog) but were "being
virtualized" into the hidden directory
C:/Users/UserName/AppData/Local/VirtualStore/Program Files/Dialog.
Once I understood the method employed by Vista I was able to
successfully copy across the Dialog directory from XP and it's been
working fine for a couple of weeks now.

I've since found that several other legacy applications behave in the
same way, so I expect this is the cause of your problem with Agent.

HTH.

Hi Exiddor,
This is very interesting but I don't understand. If your files were going to
C:/Users/UserName/AppData/Local/VirtualStore/Program Files/Dialog.
How did you get them to go to C:/Program Files/Dialog?
Can you please be specific? This is all new to me and I am probably a little behind on this stuff.

Maybe I can do a new install and then copy all my data from XP Agent and put it there?
I didn't try that.

Maybe If I shut off UAC that might work?

Since I am also having a problem with no sound and will have to wait for the right drivers. I have some time to spare so
I contacted Forte Agent and asked them when they will support Vista.

Interesting.

I use Agent 3.0 and have no problems at all with it in Vista. Didn't
even need to re-install it. I just created a shortcut to where it was
installed for XP and it works just fine in Vista.

I'm still learning Vista and I'm certainly no expert but, as I
understand it, when a program tries to write to a "protected" location
(such as "C:/Program Files"), Vista will create a "virtual" copy of the
data and copy it to the hidden VirtualStore directory instead of writing
it into the original location. I believe this is one of the features of
UAC.

However, see the following post by Les Herrman - I just tried that and
it works!

That's really interesting - I'd never have thought of doing that! I
just tried it on a test machine and it does seem to work perfectly. It
also means that you don't need to synchronize two copies of the
newsreader.

However, it does seem a bit "naughty" to me so I'm not going to attempt
this on my production machine until I better understand the implications
of doing something like this.

But anyway, thanks for the interesting idea :)

Hi Les,
Now I am really confused that is exactly what I did with Agent 4.0. I don't know what I did wrong. I have copied the
Agent folder several times in XP and never had a problem. I do have an OEM version of XP but I don't think that matters?

Hi Bill,
If you are using the default access level, you will need to move Agent's database location from its default location of
C:\Program Files\Agent\data to your computer account's user data area. This is because as a security measure,
normal account in Vista does not have full write access to the Program Files location and Agent has been in existence long before Vista.

I think this is saying even though I am the administrator I should put the Agent folder in my root folder in Documents &
Settings?
Is that what I am reading?
When in doubt, check the authors website. The answer is there:
