Vista Wakes Up from Hibernate in Middle of the Night

Windows Update, that is the culprit!!!

Thank you so much, Steve. Without your tip, I don't know, how many more
hours I would spend on it.

I went to Change settings of Windows Update last night and changed Install
new updates: at 4:00AM from 3:00AM. The event log shows this morning my
computer woke up 4:00 instead of 3:00. You may ask why there are updates
for installation every day. This is another problem that I have. One update
for SQL server ((KB934458) has been installed SUCCESSFULLY every day since
7/21.

Michasel,

I did check Task Scheduler with Show Hidder Tasks. That was my first
suspect. I made sure none of them has the option Wake the computer to run
this task checked. Unfortunately Windows Update is not a normal scheduled
task and it has the privilege to wake up the computer.

You can prevent that easily

Control Panel > Windows Update > Change Settings >
Select "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them."

Then your system will let you know updates have arrived
but give you the choice to install them at your convenience.

Julian, you are right that once the cause is identified it is very easy to
take care of.

The problem with many issues such as this is that it is very hard to
diagnose.
Windows's help offers very limited help for these problems. I found the
discussion groups such as this one, blogs are the places to find tips.

I had a similar problem when I first started using Vista.
A task that I left to run overnight was interrupted by Windows
updating automatically.

With respect to Windows help, modern operating systems and the work
they are expected to do is so complex that even if everything was
fully documented it would still be a struggle to locate the particular
help one required.

An average operating system could easily need 100,000s of pages
to document comprehensively.

Having said that the Help & Support facility does cover an awful
lot of stuff and is menued quite well but you have to know what
you're looking for, the right search terms etc., and there's no easy
way around that on any system

right words to search on.

I had this same problem and checked the event logs/system and found
entries for power-troubleshooter, which told me that it was Windows
Media Centre updater that was running in the night and waking up the
machine. Sure enough when I checked through the scheduled tasks under
Microsoft/windows/medi player I found two entries for mcupdate, one of
which was set to wake the computer to run. I unchecked this option from
the conditions tab. I hope this helps someone.
We are seeing the same issue. Our laptop suddenly wakes up, always in
the middle of the night. Thank you for figuring this out.
