vista sucks

Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Ebuntu Linux are free with support at no additional
cost. It also includes a massive amount of free open source programs which
include Open Office. Its also one of the easiest of the Linux installs.
There is only one disc to download or you can order online. Very clean
system!

Sorry, but most of those require more effort to get running than Vista
does, but they don't require the CPU/Memory that Vista does.

I know I dual boot Ubuntu and have Kubuntu desktop installed as well.

But what does this have to do with my question?

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.

You get what you pay for.

What about the other 435 distros???

What about them?

I can speak for Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Fedora Core, openSUSE, RedHat, Debian
and Mandriva.

What would you like to know?

It does come with Windows XP, if you get it pre-installed on a new PC, which
is probably what happened to this guy.

No it doesn't. It is THE VENDORS CHOICE as to include it or not.

Only if your time is worthless.

Why would you say that? I have found over the last five years that
installing setting up and administering a Linux box takes a LOT less time
than MS. Before I retired two years ago, there was one full time IT person
assigned to keep the MS computers up and running. I did the same job for
the Linux workstations - on a part time basis - took about four hours per
month.

How many Linux workstations were there?
How many MS workstations were there?
Which MS OS were they running?
I spent a lot of time keeping Win98 up and running, but have had very few
problems with WinXP.

How much do you pay for the air you breathe?

What does that have to do with the price of eggs?

Based on my recent installs of Ubuntu 6.10 and Windows Vista Ultimate,
I'd say the time is about the same - 30 minutes.

It's the stuff afterwards that adds to it.

1) In Vista you then have to install all your 3rd party software.

2). In Ubuntu (and virtually any other Linux distro) you have most all
the software you need so there's little to install (at least not right
away).

4) But what you do need are codecs for playing DVDs, mp3s, wmas, wmvs
and so forth. Vista Ultimate comes with the most popular (with the
exception of Real and Quicktime) out of the box.

Riiight.

Using older hardware? Try using modern hardware with an up to date 3D
card and 802.11g Wifi. And then integrate it into a Windows network.

Yes Ubuntu does install pretty much OK but you have to jump through a
myriad of hoops to get multimedia to any decent level on it and to be
able to install vendor provided 3D drivers. When someone has to write
an application to install all the stuff such as CODECS and 3D drivers,
then you have an issue.

And then there's Samba....

Six of one, half a dozen of the other. The ultimate inconvenience
factor is the same.
