Hi Jon,
Sorry, This is way above me but I will try the instructions I think I have
them all except Schedule it using an
administrator level account (General tab)
Thanks for your help.

Hi RScotti

Yes, sorry that was a bit ambiguous. I meant the account with which you log
in, which is normally the default when you set up a task anyway.

Possibly. I recall there being a comment somewhere in the book about the
fact that you can't run Scheduled Tasks that use 'System' credentials
interactively (ie when you're logged on).So perhaps if you're using
automatic login, as many do, then that might cause the task to fail (?)
Right now I am NOT using Auto login cause I didn't know where it was I use to use it in XP with Tweakui

The 'on idle' condition may also be a factor, or perhaps the code in the dll
is just plain buggy.
I think it is buggy but going to try your way.It can't hurt?

PS: I ordered the Vista Resource Kit book for $29.90 from Amazon!

Shouldn't do. You can always delete or disable the newly created scheduled
task at a later date, if you find what is causing the original to fail, and
manage to get that one working.

A better price than I got it for ;-)

It's a fairly high-level book, but it has some priceless chapters imho eg
the one on Search / Indexing in Vista.

I have tried everything on this and MS can't even figure it out BUT they are going to have their developers look at my
clean Install configuration with nothing on it except my email app.

I hope I can understand it. I am only a little technical. If it goes by simple steps I should be OK.

They're actually selling it for $37.99 (with free shipping), so he must be
talking about getting it from one of the marketplace people selling copies
there (which are about $35 when accounting for shipping).

I hope this isn't a dumb question, but are Shadow Copy and System Restore
the same thing?
My brief research tells me they aren't, but I could be wrong.
OP was about SR.

Shadow Copy - Can I configure how often?

Actually on reflection the code posted by 'Joe Couvillion[MSFT]' in that
thread would work as is.
Just need to remove the 'wscript.echo' lines.

Is it possible they sell a version without the CD? Maybe that's what he got.

Yes it is one of the Market place Purchases.

Seller: (e-mail address removed)
Shipping & Handling: $3.99
Your Total: $33.89

Sorry I forgot to answer this. It is a new copy with the CD.

You can search on the entire text of the book via Amazon.
I tried that but I could only read about 20 pages which included the index and the Contents.

No there are different. But SR needs the shadowstorage from what I know.
From Help:
Shadow copies can be copies of files on your computer or shared files on a computer on a network.

From my own experience System Restore needs shadowstorage. I once changed my shadowstorage from 140 GB's to 20 GB's and
lost all my restore points.
I have a 1 TB RAID0 HD

I think 'Shadow Copies' relate to previous versions of files / folders, aka
the 'previous versions', whereas 'System Restore' relates more to system
changes (registry / key Vista files etc). But, as I understand it, they're
both rolled into one, in the way that they're stored.

You are correct. I think what I meant was the shadowstorage in part of System Restore properties at least that's what I
have seen.

Hi,
I tried to reach both Ed Bott & Craig Stinson on this but the emails in the book didn't work.
I would like them to know about this if they already don't but since Ed Bott has closed all his comments pages I fell he
does know.

I feel cheated, for the money I paid I should at least get the correct way to do this since nothing else seems to work.

I've been on vacation for the past three weeks, Rich. And I haven't
closed all comments at my site, only those that are more than 30 days
old. If you had looked at a recent post you would have seen (and still
can) that comments are open. By coincidence, I explained my new
comments policy this morning.

I'm very sorry about about the error. We'll correct it on our errata
page and also get a fix in the next edition. Just to clear up the
misunderstanding, we don't work at Microsoft. The three authors (you
forgot Carl Siechert) live 1000, 2000, and 3000 miles from Redmond,
respectively. We got lots of great help from some folks at Microsoft,
but basically we are treated like every other author and we have to
figure most of this stuff out for ourselves. In fact, for Windows
Vista Inside Out we delayed final manuscript by a full month so we
could test throughly against final code, something many competing
books didn't do at all. (I know at least one well-known author who
handed in final manuscript in October, before RTM came out, something
we refused to do).

Anyway, we regret every error and wish we could be perfect. We can't,
so we'll settle for being as accurate and responsive as possible.

I've sent you a private e-mail as well so you can reach me if you have
any other questions or comments.
