Clearing Cache

I have a new Dell XPS 8500, with Windows 7 Professional, SP1,
with Spywareblaster, Avast, and Windows firewall.

(1) TB HD
Intel (R) Core (TM) i7-33-3770 CPU @ 3.40 GHz 3.40 GHz
Ram 12.0 GB
System type : 64-bit operating system

I recently tried to order Windows 7 Inside and Out by Ed
Bott, Carl Siechert, and Craig Stinson from Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/Windows®-Inside-Out-Ed-Bott/dp/0735626650

When I try to add it to the cart I get this message:

Please confirm that you want to add the item(s) listed
below to your cart.

I click the continue button but it just gives me the same
message. I tried to write an email to Amazon about this
and that also failed. I tried this half a dozen times and
tried again 4 hours later with the same result.

I called Amazon customer service and they told me to clear
the cache. I looked up the instructions for doing so but my
Firefox doesn't look anything like the ones shown. My
Firefox has grayed out 'icons' on the bottom of the screen
(Downloads, Bookmarks, History, Add-ons, Sync, Settings)

So do I have to configure Firefox to clear the cache? If
so, I have no idea of what to add etc.

"Remove recent browsing, search and download history"

http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/remove-recent-browsing-search-and-download-history

On a modern copy of Firefox, there should be an orange button on
the top left, with the word "Firefox" written on it. It hides a
menu. Which includes the word "History" and from there, you can
clear cookies or whatever.

http://support.cdn.mozilla.net/media/uploads/gallery/images/2013-05-23-16-09-29-1d6581.png

Depending on some other settings, it's also possible your
browser is set to reject the storage of cookies. (You should
always review the Preferences on a newly acquired copy of
Firefox, just in case.)

I would hope though, that there would be a clear message with
the word "cookies" mentioned in it, if the site is experiencing a
problem storing a cookie. I get complaints about that
here, occasionally (which I just ignore, as I'm too lazy to
check... :) ). Only if I was using a shopping cart at
the time, would that motivate me to fix my cookies.

In Firefox, you can use the URL "about:config" to expose
a settings dialog. That dialog is much more detailed than
the Preferences. In case you were ever wondering "do they
have a setting for ABC ?" , that's the thing you check
to see. There can be hundreds of lines stored in that
dialog. The main problem with "about:config" as an interface,
is there is *no undo* option. Don't change anything in
there, unless you receive appropriate guidance on how
to undo the damage later :) I learned this the
hard way, by erasing a line from the file, only
to realize I would have a hard time putting it back.
Fortunately, another line with a similar name, could
be used as a template, so I could make up a new line
and insert it. It's very similar to using Regedit
in a way, as it performs a similar function. At the time,
I hadn't backed up the appropriate folder ("my parachute
failed, and I hit the ground"). I'm a tiny bit more
careful now, before doing "about:config".

Another one you can try if you're bored, is "about:plugins",
which will tell you what plugins are installed in Firefox.
It should also work for Seamonkey or Netscape, or members
of the same family.

I think I know the answer,... I'm opening the "show all my bookmarks>bookmarks menu>" then use my bookmarks to get around when I should be using "view bookmarks toolbar>getting started" correct?

I did click the IE icon on the taskbar, which was pre-installed
on the computer and this was the very first time I had clicked
it and immediately Avast notified me of a virus!@ and recommended
a boot scan which I did.

It found the infected file at:

C:\Users\Rob\Documents\Downloads\MSNChatMessenger_setup.exe
is infected by Win32:installer-L [pup]

Avast gave me several options and I choose to delete all and
the scan continued from 37% with no other virus's found and
ended at the sign on page.

Still, just to make sure, I ran a full Avast scan afterwards
and checked the software updater to make sure everything was
up top date.

Thoughts/Suggestions?
Thanks,
Robert

Viruses are specifically self replication malicious software. If it is
malicious and does not self replicate, it is a "trojan".

A *very* minor correction (although not about spelling this time): A
virus is simply self-replicating software. Although for practical
purposes, all viruses are malicious, they don't have to be, and
technically being malicious is not part of its definition.

Without writing a very long monlogue to begin with to cover ALL bases, yes
that statement is an apropos qualification.

OK. And I'll be kind and not comment on your spelling this time <vbg>

And lest you think I'm just being a pain in the ass, let me add that
you're one of my newsgroup heroes. I've learned many things from your
posts, especially about malware.

Went back to IE and ordered the book !

Thank you and I'll add my thanks and
appreciation to David, Ken, Paul and
others for taking their time to help
me and so many others.

Not only help but try and explain it
so that I can understand it better.

Many thanks Guys,
Robert
