Defragmenting:

I have a Dell XPS 8500, with Windows 7 Professional, SP1,
with Spywareblaster, CcCleaner, Avast, and Windows firewall.

(1) TB HD
Intel (R) Core (TM) i7-33-3770 CPU @ 3.40 GHz 3.40 GHz
Ram 12.0 GB
System type : 64-bit operating system


I was just wondering if the disk defragmenter that comes with system
tools is sufficient or would it be better if I install Piriforms defraggler?

I would never pay extra for a non-M$ defragger on any Windows OS newer
than Win9x, unless you totally abuse your PC. For any normal user
workload, any old defragger run even a few times a year is adequate.

Note that I'm voting for the built-in M$ defragger because it is free
(and inadvertently tested by millions of users), not because I am a
M$-fanboy. Given the sizes of modern HDs, plus NTFS, frequent
defragging is no longer needed, IMHO.

On my PCs, defragging has not been visibly helpful since I stopped
backing up to mag.tape.

free home version but from what you say it isn't
needed.

IMO, new drives are so fast that it really does not matter.
Yesterday I defragged C: using Win default defragger after two years and
12% fragged. Have not noticed any difference in speed at all.

Check your "background" scheduling. IIRC W7Pro by default is set to
defrag either "continuously" or on a once a day basis. I came across
this while configuring a clients newly purchased W7 Pro notebook. I
turned it off. Waste of CPU cycles. Check your drive once a month, and
if Windows' included defragger says the hard drive needs it, then, and
only then, do so.
