virus

Despite the fact that I have AntiVirus software, I get the feeling some of
this virus trash is getting in my system. (b/c of the constant "spyware" and
"http://x..." pop-ups) Can someone explain to me (in laymens' terms) what
this 'stuff' is and a good way to clean my computer of it and anything else
that might be where it doesn't belong or simply slowing things down...other
than the 'Tools' -> 'Internet Options' path
 
I use AdAware SE and SpyBot Search and Destroy in addition to my AV
software...I run them each at least weekly.
