Virus problem

I am trying to get rid of a trojan horse type of virus. I have disabled system restore, have run Nortun Live Update, and am at the point where I need to restart Windows in safe mode. The instructions I have say to click start, click shut down, wait for the shut down dialog box, then choose restart, OK, and then I'm supposed to see a message saying, "Please select the operating system to start, then I'm supposed to choose safe mode. But my Windows shut down then turns off the computer--it doesn't give me a shut down WIndows dialog box, so I can't choose the safe mode option.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

give me a shut down WIndows dialog box, so I can't choose the safe mode
option. If you hold F8 key at OS startup you will be given option to enter Safemode.
If that does not work try:

Start>Run msconfig and select Boot.ini tab. Check Safeboot box.
