I have a compaq that I have upgraded from windows ME to
windows xp home. I am constantly getting a virtual
memory low message when I start the machine. I am
constantly doing a system restore and it will work for a
while and then the message comes back. How do I get rid
of it permanently? I have 256 ram and 40 gig hard drive.
any help would be appreciated.

Set your virtual memory to a level Windows is happy with. It is possible to
run with none, or less than the recommended, but for now until you are
certain how you want it set, give XP what it wants:
Start> Control Panel> System> Advanced tab> Performance - hit the settings
button. Advanced tab. At the bottom is virtual memory, hit change. For now
set it to 'system managed size' (I'm assuming you have only one partition) -
it's the third radio button down. Make sure it is filled and hit set. Okay
everything back to the desktop. It won't take too much space, and it'll end
the annoying message.

See the Problems section at www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm. I have also
had a report (unconfirmed, so if it turns out to be this please let me
know) that Norton AV 2004 causes this trouble specifically at boot
