Viewing pictures with windows explorer

Z

Zaphod

Ok, I have been looking for an answer to my problem for a couple weeks now
searching various web sites/news groups ect.. and so far I have come up with
nothing.

I am using windows XP with Internet Explorer 6 installed. I have changed
the default setting so that when I am using Windows Explorer to view
pictures on my hard drive they are viewed in I.E. instead of the windows
picture and fax viewer.

My problem is that everytime I open a new picture it is opened in a new
window. On my old machine which ran 98 it did not matter if I opened 1
picture, 10 or even 100 pictures they all opened in the same browser window
and I would like to be able to do the same thing with this computer.

I have gone to tools/Internet options/advanced and selected the "reuse
windows for launching shortcuts" option but that only seems to apply to
hyper links while browsing the web.

Does anyone know how to correct this? Perhaps there is a registry setting
that needs to be changed?

Mark.

Try changing the details in Folder Options-File Types for the type of
graphic you are talking about (.jpg or .gif?)

Try this for Open in same window:
DDE message:
"file://%1",,-1,,,,,

Application
IExplore

DDE application not running(blank)

Topic
WWW_OpenURL

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.

I am referring to either jpg or gif does not matter.

I had seen the solution you suggested on the Microsoft web site but it said
that the solution was for windows 95/98 so I didn't try it at the time.

Upon your suggestion I went ahead and gave it a try.

Here are the results.

For my version of windows, (XP home addition) I go to

Explorer-Tools-Folder Options

I click on the File Types tab and scroll down to the file type I am looking
for in this case I am going for JPG, while there though I am also adjusting
the JPEG and JPE file types.

The files are currently associated with I.E. and I am offered two options,
there is one button for me to change the file association and another button
for me to restore the file association which automatically re-associates the
file with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Ok so I restore the association back to the Picture and Fax Viewer and I am
now offered a button labeled Advanced. I click on Advanced then click on
Edit and I am now able to adjust the DDE settings as suggested. Once I have
changed the settings I close everything out and go back to windows explorer.

Here is where things get kind of funny. Keep in mind that I am unable to
change any DDE settings while the file type is associated with I.E. so at
this point the file association says that it is the picture and fax viewer
but the DDE is set for IExplorer.

So in windows explorer I go and find a picture I want to open and get the
following error message.

"Windows cannot find 'C:\moved files\pictures\art\colors.jpg'. Make sure you
typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click
the Start button, and then click Search."

The file path above of course just being an example. At the same time
however the picture is still opened in the picture and fax viewer.

However if I already have an I.E window open and then go into Windows
explore and try to open a picture then the picture will open and I can open
as many pictures as I want with out a new browser opening every time.

So that means I kind of have it working the way I want it to but not really.
It is more like a work around where I am forcing the computer to work in a
way it does not want to.

I did not suggest what you finally decided upon and I have no idea how
you could misinterpret my response so badly.

I gave you a possible solution for using IE and not for changing the
association to something else.
I can see no reason why you did that.

Yes, the DDE is set for IE, so if you want to use something else, then
uncheck "Use DDE"
Your association is obviously incorrect but if you supply details of
exactly what you have in the "Application used...", I will see what I
can do, though I don't have the application you decided upon.

No, I understood what you said perfectly clear but perhaps I was not clear
in my explanation.

When I have the file type (jpg, gif or what ever) associated with I.E. I am
not given a DDE option at all. Period! There is no place for me to change
the DDE settings or even a "Use DDE" check box for me to either check or
uncheck. It just isn't there. This is also true for any other picture
viewing program that I try to associate with a jpg file.

By playing around with it though I found that if I restored the file
association back to its default setting (this being the windows picture and
fax viewer) then and only then am I able to make any adjustments to the DDE.
So even though the files types were now once again associated with the
picture and fax viewer I had the DDE setting set up for I.E. and this worked
to trick the system into doing what I wanted it to do assuming that I
already had a I.E window open.

I understand that this isn't correct but it was working as a temporary work
around till I could figure out how to get it set up correctly.

Later though I learned that after rebooting my system the DDE setting for
the picture and fax viewer reverted back to their original settings.

I appreciate your help though and any further insight that you might have.

To help insure that we are on the same page and both talking about the same
items I have taken some screen captures and posted them online. Maybe this
will help.

You have NOT associated the file type with IE in the "Application used
to perform action".

Funny thing is that I HAVE NOT ever said that I had associated the file type
with IE in the "Application used to perform action" line. In fact I have
said that when the JPEG file type is associated with IE I am not able to
access that area with the DDE and Application used settings.

Since the ONLY way I can adjust those settings is to have the file type
associated with Picture and Fax viewer I have played around with associating
the file type with the Picture and Fax viewer but adjusting the DDE settings
(and yes that includes the Application used line) to an IE setup just to see
what would happen. It does not work that way either but then I really did
not expect it to.

I have played around with associating
the file type with the Picture and Fax viewer

If you want to restore the original defaults try

regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll
