Cache Picture Issue - Desktop Support

I have a very complicated issue, I have never seen before.
First off, I preface with I have been IT Desktop/Deskside support for a 5
years.

I have a problem with opening pictures from comcast web mail program.
www.comcast.net

When I open a picture that anyone sends to me, basically what happens is it
pulls cache files that are locate on recent web pages. Now I know what you
are saying this is easy. Let me explain what I have done for
troubleshooting.

First off:
Windows XP Home
Internet Explorer 6.0

Troubleshoot:
Clear cache and cookies from Internet Options - same problem
Clear C:\Windows\Temp - no good
Clear C:\Documents and Settings\<all profile>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Temporary Internet Files - no good

I can save the photo attachment to the desktop or POP3 my mail into Outlook.
The photo attachment opens fine.

I changed the jpg file to open in Picassa, MS Picture Manager, and Adobe
Photoshop and tested the webmail. All three programs load these unwanted
images when opening webmail. Opening each file in Outlook or after saved --
in all three picture programs open fine.

Checking the properties of the picture. It shows file location as:
C:\Docs and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Temp
Internet Files\Content.IE5\"new cache name"

Oddly, this file does not exist anywhere on the machine. Hidden files and
folders are shown.
Tried Internet Explorer 7 with all the same above - same problem.

Reimage the machine. Format NTFS - non quick. Reinstall Windows.
Same issue.

Any ideas?

Hi Lester,
I do not have a comcast account so I can't comment from a hands on
perspective, but if you are able to forware these emails to another account
and then open them in Outlook, suggests to me that the issues lies with the
comcast mail application.
I don't know about comcast, but it is usual for http mail servers these days
not to display inserted images in html mail, but to include them as
attachments instead. It quite possible could be your settings for comcast
mail.... view as html?

Regards.

Rob,

Thanks for the feedback. However, I can log into my comcast email account
from another machine. I do not have the issue.

Hi,
It seems that the reimage would have taken care of this but (and this is
just a guess) try deleting the Content.IE5 folder for the affected user
account. A new folder will be created on restart. Login as another user with
administrator privileges, or from the machine's default administrator
account (startup in safe mode.) Make sure that you can see hidden and system
files (Folder Options> View) Then delete the affected Content.IE5 folder
from
Windows Explorer. It will be at [C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5] Restart.

Hope this helps,
Don

Don,

Thanks for the feedback. I have system files and hidden files shown. That
Content.IE folder does not exist.

However, I installed Firefox. It works fine. Thank you for all your help

I think that you ignored the part of Don's directions that said to log in as
a different user with Administrator privileges. You CANNOT see the
Content.ie5 folder for the logged in user.
