Video Capture Output Size limited to default (320x240)

I am using MovieMaker on a 3.2 Mhz PC with 1 Gig fast
memory and 120 Gig avalable hard drive space. Operating
system is Windows XP Pro (Service Pack 1). I have the
latest drivers for all devices.

My Capture device is a Pixelview X-Capture card with the
Conexant 2388x chip. Using Ulead DVD Factory 3 or the
AMCAP utility, the card will convert analog sources in up
to 720x480 at 30 fps without any problems.

However, whenever I select anything other than the 320 x
240 default settings in Moviemaker's "Configure Video
Capture Device > Properties page" I get an error message
saying "The video device is currently in use. Close any
other application that is using the device and try again."

I have checked the device manager and there are no
conflicts. No other device is using the capture card.

Have looked all over for some info as to this problem -
but perhaps someone here has a solution.

Thanks in advance

Sounds like you may be trying to capture in a compressed format like WMV, do
you have dv-avi set as the capture format?

No - I am using "Best quality for playback on my computer"
and in the Properties "Color Space / Compression" I have
tries RGB 555, RGB 24 and YU2 - all with the same negative
result.

Weirdly, yesterday it worked once - it "accepted" 640 x
280 once - but when I tried to repeat the setting it was
back to default only.

It is driving me around the bend :)

You need to go to

"Show more choices"

and pick dv-avi from the list.

Best playback for computer is a copmpressed wmv file.
