Very weird intermittent sound problem

Hi,

I've had this problem four times now in the last six months. For no apparent
reason, I lose sound on my computer. I can raise the slider and hear sound
again but it immediately falls back down to zero. After a period of time the
sound usually comes back. I'm worried that it won't this time. Any
suggestions?

I'm not running anything weird that I know of. My machine is an HP xw4300
Workstation and I have a Realtek sound card. Reboots don't help.

Open device mgr, expand the sound tree,R.click on all realtec hardware
one @ a time,select "uninstall" do not restart pc,when thru,close
out,shutdown
pc.Power off, move the sound card to other PCI slot, start pc,xp will
reinstall on
start-up...

Thanks for the helpful reply. I did a bunch of uninstalling and reinstalling
earlier in the evening and after a few reboots I actually got my audio back!
But then a few hours later the same thing happened. But this time it seemed
to happen right when I was reaching to pick up the phone. That clue got me to
take a close look at the various wires I have on my desk and I discovered a
very small volume control on one of them. (I swear I didn't know it was
there.) It turns out my phone had occasionally been leaning on the minus key
for the volume into the computer. Do I ever feel dumb.
