Problem with System Sounds working intermittently

N

Nisko

Sometime my system sounds work and most of the time they don't. My
Device Manager doesn't show any problems. When I right click on the
sound icon in the System Tray and click on Sounds, then try the sounds,
most of the time they don't work. I have all the latest digitally
signed drivers (HP Pavilion laptop). When I go straight to the Sounds
folder and try the sounds, they don't work. I don't even know which
app is supposed to play these sounds (it might help if I knew in order
to solve the problem). I have no viruses or malware in my system. Not
sure - but it seems like the system sounds stop working sometime while
the system is booted and has been running for a while. Please - could
someone offer some other things to check or try? What app is supposed
to run these sounds? Are there any other sites that might be able to
help (or other Newsgroups)? I depend heavily on these sounds working
properly so thi sissue is important to me to solve. If I've left out
any relative detail, please let me know. I need some help!!! Thank
you.........

Try the 'mute' function (probably the Fn and a Ctrl key) - turn mute on/off?

Maybe try the audio manager (e.g. like the Windows volume control but more
comprehensive) - maybe one of the 'channels' is muted e.g. the 'general' or
"cd audio" or whatever.

You could ask on a forum for the HP model you have.....

As to applications to play sound that is endless.

Can you try playing a WAV file in Win Media Player, or MP3 or whatever. Try
playing a DVD in Media Centre etc.

Maybe the laptop has a physical volume control (like the volume dial on a
radio) - turn it up/down.

Maybe you've tried all the above, but I can't think of anything else, if as
you say Windows reports no problems with the hardware.

Which plug is that? I have a laptop with built-in speakers.
This answer has only gone to microsoft.public.windows.vista.general because
I'm not subscribed to the other groups.

Yes, I've tried all of the above. I don't think the hardware is bad - I
think something, maybe a driver, is conflicting with another driver. I'll
just have to keep looking. Thanks......
