Very odd boot up problem

Hello
I have just recovered Windows XP on an Acer Aspire 3000 laptop using the
recovery disks.
I have installed all Windows updates including SP3 and IE8 and everything
was running just fine.
I now find that on boot the laptop freezes half way through the boot process
leaving me unable to use the keyboard and mouse and I can't turn it off
manually using the on/off button either.
Solution is to pull out the AC adaptor and remove the battery but on switch
on the boot process locks up again.
I have since found, after tinkering, that if I leave the battery out I can
boot up normally and everything is fine but when I boot up with the battery
in place I get boot lock up.
Has anyone heard of this before and could offer me suggestions please?
Many thanks

On some laptops, a bad battery will cause a boot failure.....looks like
yours is one of those. Time to replace the battery. If it is the
original battery in an Aspire 3000, or even if it's the first
replacement battery, it is likely overdue for a new one already.

I recently bought a replacement at a good price for an Aspire 3004 at

Many thanks for this. I would never have guessed this and tried all sorts of
things before realising the the battery 'could be' the cause of the
problems.
Thanks again
