verifying modem works with cable modem service

Does anyone know how to verify that your modem is capable
of working with cable modem service? I am using dial up,
and want to begin cable modem service, but want to verify
accessibility prior to any more added expense.

Usually a broadband ISP will provide their own cable modem,
and even a NIC card if you don't have one. A dial-up modem
cannot be used with broadband.

Call your local Cable company and ask them. They can give you all the
information you need to know.

Greetings --

If you're asking if your current telephony modem will work, the
answer is "No." A cable modem is a completely different piece of
hardware.

Contact your cable ISP. They will have a very specific list of
cable modems that are compatible with their service.

A few years ago, a cable modem was very expensive, over
$400, so most cable ISPs rented them. That is still an
option but you can buy a good brand DOCIS certified modem
for less than $100 and many ISPs have rebate programs. You
can buy a cable/DSL modem off the shelf at CompUSA and
BestBuy, the local stores will have details about what works
in their local areas. Most cable ISPs will have a FAQ on
recommended modems and any rebates offered.

Greetings --

Jim, I know all of this. (Except I never go to Best Buy or
CompUSA for computer-related items; the ignorance of their sales
staffs offends me, somehow.) Did you reply to the wrong post, per
chance? ;-}

No, it was on the thread, but it wasn't intended for you.
And yes, I know most of the staff at retail stores is only
aware of the next coffee break. But sometimes you can find
a bargain.

I would agree with Bill. Your best place for information is the cable
company. If you're lucky you might even get it for free.
