Good question, Roger. I'm hanging on like blind bat in a cave. :-(

Like you, I'm resisting crossing over. And there's still the issue

Firefox isn't a newsgroup reader...nor is Outlook by itself. When I select
"News" in Outlook's menu bar, it takes me to OE for newsgroups.

Too many choices...and none ideal...is how I see it! It's shame to break up

Hey you valuable ones - ins't there an option in there, somehow??

I have all ".NET Framework" installed on all my machines and when a
family member or friend asks me to rebuild their Windows installation, I
always reinstall all of them. If one of their programs needs one of the
".NET", it's already installed; never had any issue.

Just make sure to visit "Windows Update" a few times after installing
them; Important and Optional updates.
But it requires installing .NET Framework 3.5 (and a pretty large app,
at over 200 MB!), as I recall. .NET 2.0 won't cut it. And that
could be a concern, no? (I thought I recall someone mentioning some
issue with that on fileforum, like it broke some of his existing 2.0
apps, or that some existing apps using .NET now ran slower? I can't
recall.

What was the service that Microsoft requires you to register for, to
be able to use it?

And Giganews has a LOT of newsgroups (and that price is nice)!

I still have an account with Earthlink, that offers the NNTP
newsgroups (which I think is indirectly handled through Giganews).

But there are several newsgroup servers available (a free one is
nntp.aioe.org) that you could sign-up for. Another free one may be
free.teranews.com, as I recall, or pay a small monthly fee and get
even better service (like with Giganews - $2.99 a month ain't bad!).

Well, but there is this other option I mentioned - just go to another
newsgroup provider (like nntp.aioe.org, or free.teranews.com, or
Giganews, etc), where you can still access the microsoft.public
newsgroups. Either that, or we'll all end up on the forums.

Is this separation anxiety? Methinks so. . . I'll miss those I've trusted.

On the eternal-september.org, I checked their 'support' groups and the 2 I

If you subscribe to microsoft.public.windowsxp.general via Eternal
September, you will see exactly the same posts as you do on the
msnews.microsoft.com server you have been using. Nothing more. Nothing
less.

And for the immediate future, many of us plan to stick around. The OE
groups were removed from the MS servers June 1, but I am still there via
Eternal September.

While the current newsgroups will be available on non-MS servers for

Just to give you an idea, the top group here is MS Answers Forums as they

[Snip] Can I add the above, to my OE window on left
pane, as I did with my MS NG's e g I have at moment
listed msnews.microsoft.com only this group heading
left on it

Roger

Good question, Roger. I'm hanging on like blind bat in a
cave. :-(

Well, but what's the point, as long as some of these NNTP
newsgroups remain active?

Like you, I'm resisting crossing over. And there's still
the issue of which bridge (Community Forums, VS Microsoft).

Or the advantages, if any, over accessing them directly in
IE, at the Microsofts Answers Home Page:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx

Someone I trust said she is using Giganews for UseNet
groups....$2.99 a month subscription plan.

They seem to be in better control of spam..."

And Giganews has a LOT of newsgroups (and that price is nice)!

I still have an account with Earthlink, that offers the NNTP
newsgroups (which I think is indirectly handled through
Giganews).

But there are several newsgroup servers available (a free one
is nntp.aioe.org) that you could sign-up for. Another free
one may be free.teranews.com, as I recall, or pay a small
monthly fee and get even better service (like with Giganews -
$2.99 a month ain't bad!).

OE isn't going out until 2014, when support for XP is supposed
to be discontinued. No security patches, etc. Though MS
doesn't *seem* to be saying those still using XP/OE won't be
able to do so...it will just be at their own risk.

Well, I still plan on using OE (and XP) well beyond 2014, so
that's a non-issue for me, and many, I expect. True, MS
support may be discontinued then, but there are other support
avenues available, like these newsgroups, or the forums
allegedly replacing them.

Firefox isn't a newsgroup reader...nor is Outlook by itself.
When I select
"News" in Outlook's menu bar, it takes me to OE for
newsgroups.

Right. I don't have Outlook installed, and just use Outlook
Express for mail and news, which is fine by me (I don't need
the extra bells and whistles of Outlook).

Too many choices...and none ideal...is how I see it! It's
shame to break up
a supportive group like we had here -

Hey you valuable ones - ins't there an option in there,
somehow??

Well, but there is this other option I mentioned - just go to
another newsgroup provider (like nntp.aioe.org, or
free.teranews.com, or Giganews, etc), where you can still
access the microsoft.public newsgroups. Either that, or we'll
all end up on the forums.

Is this separation anxiety? Methinks so. . .

Maybe. :) And all to what purpose? (since the NNTP format
seems generally preferable)

I'll miss those I've trusted.

But some of them are still here! Although it sounds like some
are abandoning the newsgroups, and going over to the forums.

And what is also annoying is that some older newsgroups dedicated
to specific topics like Windows98, don't seem to have any
counterparts on the more generically-categorized forums, at least
when I looked at the web page access through that link I
mentioned. There is no forum for Win98, for example.

On the eternal-september.org, I checked their 'support' groups and
the 2 I went into was only SPAM, no moderators what-so-ever - great
help for people
that one is.

I'm still miss our helpers from here, and do realize they'll be
'moving' over to other forums, but it's MS's loss.

I'm reading all this in E-S and don't see any spam at all?

Let me qualify what I mentioned previously/earlier hereon -- that was in
their "support" groups; I've not been to their MS sections, yet.

Then unsubscribe from the E-S "support" groups (I don't subscribe to
them) and go to microsoft.public.windowsxp.general and the other MS
groups of your choice. No spam. :)

You have to sign on with a "Windows Live" ID (same as "passport" ID was), but that's all. Try using the HTTP interface and you will be overjoyed with the Bridge approach.

But do check to see what your via NNTP posts look like (formatting) in the
forum itself from time to time, please. You may be very surprised at what
you see.

And please remember to poll the forums for the most recent posts before you
start replying via NNTP Bridge. I'm seeing way too many posts being made
that clearly show the sender's not read all of the replies to the thread
yet.
