Using Wireless Internet Networks

Hi-

Recently, I connected to a friend’s wireless internet network but when I
tried to use my internet based applications they did not work. It was as
though I was not connected to the internet even though I was connected with
an excellent signal strength.

I have since used other wireless networks and my internet based applications
worked. Yesterday, I successfully connected to the internet but for whatever
reason none of my internet based applications worked.

Please let me know if there is a setting or feature that I need to adjust
and/or if you need any other details.

Thank you!

If your "internet based applications" (whatever that is) didn't work - you
were not connected to the Internet.

If you cannot open up Internet Explorer or Firefox (or some other browser)
and go to www.google.com or some other web page that is not blocked by some
proxy server controlled by those providing the Internet service and not
prevented by any Host File you may have set up or prevented by some malware
you have become infested with - then you are not connected to the Internet.

Nothing extraordinary there.

- Scan your machine for malware.
- Check your HOSTS file
- Start --> run --> cmd /k ipconfig /all --> ENTER ... to ensure you have an
IP address.
- Start --> run --> cmd /k tracert www.google.com --> ENTER ... to see how
far out you get.
- http://www.whatismyip.com/ to get your external IP address.

Thanks for the message.

The internet based applications I was referring to are Outlook/Internet
Explorer.

How can I check for malware?

I did what you suggested and everything else seems to be in order.

Currently, I am using my wireless network and it is working. The issue I
described has presented itself at two different locations over the past few
months. During both instances,my computer indicates that it had successfully
connected to a wireless network only to than not actually have the ability to
access the internet.

What are some potential next steps to examine this issue further?

Please let me know.

Thank you.
