Using tab instead of "increase/decrease indent" in a list

When I am in a bulleted list, and I want to move to a new level, my program
won't let me use the "TAB" key. I have to use the "increase/decrease indent"
key on the toolbar, which is time consuming and silly. Does anyone know how
I can change the formatting so that I can use my TAB and SHIFT TAB keys to
change levels in bulleted lists?

In Word 97 and 2000, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the
"Tabs and backspace set left indent" box | OK.

In Word 2002 and 2003, click on Tools | AutoCorrect Options |
AutoFormat As You Type | check the "Set left- and first-indent
with tabs and backspaces" box | OK.

You don't say what version of Word you have (always helpful), but:

Word 2000 and earlier: On the Edit tab of Tools | Options, check the box for
"Tabs and backspace set left indent."

Word 2002 or 2003: On the AutoFormat As You Type tab of Tools | AutoCorrect
Options, check the box for "Set left- and first-indent with tabs and
backspaces."
