Use tab key to control list indentation

I'd like my tab key to control the tree level of bulleted and numbered lists.
Older versions of Office allow you to use the tab key to control this - tab
to increase the indent, and thus go "up" a level, and shift-tab to decrease
the indent, or move "down" a level.

Has this feature been eliminated? I cannot find anything in the help section
about this. I notice that the feature is still present in Powerpoint so it
cannot have been removed completely...

Options, then select the AutoFormat As You Type tab and check the box for
"Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces."

I tried the set tabs on indents, but it only worked on the list styles I
don't use. Is there any difference on the list type that toggles from I. to
A. to 1. to a. and so forth?

In order to be able to use Tab and Shift+Tab, your numbered items must be
part of the same outline-numbered list. Also, note that if the numbered
styles are heading styles, the "Style for following paragraph" will be
Normal (not the heading style), so there is no heading outline level to
promote or demote (Normal has a Body Text outline level).
