userinit.exe - no disk a:

I hope someone can help me here. I just upgraded from
windows 98se to windows 2000. Everytime I boot up the
machine and run windows I will get a no disk error. Most
of the time it has userinit.exe - no disk in a:. But other
times it will have other exe file names as well. I am able
to overcome this right now by inserting a floppy after I
boot up but have to take it out just before booting up as
it looks for a system disk. This is kind of a pain it the
butt and would be great if I could figure this out. Any
help work be appreciated.

I am having the same difficulty lately while my WIN 2000 machines comes up. I
had to "Cancel" out 2-3 screens of the same error message, to be able to get
my desktop. Any help regarding this is very much appreciated. Thank you.

Look in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Userinit key. There might be something
stuck in there. BE CAREFUL! Some of the things in there might be
needed for your pc to start! Post the findings back here if you are
unsure. You will probably see nddeagnt.exe in there, don't bother or
worry about that, it is required for userinit to run or load before
windows loads.

All I see is the following in the Registry:

Userinit REG_SZ C:\WINNT\system32\userinit.exe,

I have read in one of the posts earlier that it needs a "," at the end. So
Ididnit change any anything.

Ok, that's perfectly normal. But I don't know what causes the error.
You might want to run Sysinternals Autoruns to see what else might be in
your run keys that could cause this error. Or just look at the run
keys. Autoruns is a good tool to diagnose startup entries, shows
everything.
