USB Transfer slow, need another option.

I have got a ftp server on a seperate machine, that is connected to my (4
port) router via USB, and all other machines are connected to the router for
internet via the rj45, if I transfer between machines that are on the rj45
connections it is fast, if I try to transfer to the machine connected with
the USB, it is slow, I even bought a USB2.0 card thinking it would speed
things up, and alas not...

Can I get a RJ45 splitter, and connect the server (and another machine) via
RJ45 as well as USB, so it will be faster, or will that confused the
machine? especailly if two machines are off one connection?

I need a means of speeding up the tranfers, I'm only getting an average of
14KB/s, and whilst I am transfering big files, this can take some time....

I wondering if I need to change something?

Hope someone can sort my dilema out...

Regards.
Paul.

You can't run two computers on one Ethernet (RJ-45) connection, period. You
either need a router with more Ethernet ports or you need a switch to
connect to one of the Ethernet ports on the router to make more ports
available.

So, I have a switch, connected to my router (ADSL router) and then I have
more ports, simple as that, or more difficult and it just sounds easy?

It's pretty much as simple as that. If your router has an "uplink" port for
connecting another switch or device then all you need is the switch and a
standard Ethernet cable, if not then you need the switch and a crossover
cable. Connect it to your router with the proper cable, then plug computers
into it as you would plug them into the router.
