USB printer not installable

Hi,

I just installed XP. During installation I tried to connect my HP Deskjet
5740 to my system. When using the official HP software no USB port was found.
Does anyone know what I need to do?

By the way, I had this similar problem with XP on a laptop. I had no problem
installing the printer on my previous OS (Win98) on this desktop.

The usual procure, given Windows XP and USB printer, is to install the
printer's software _before_ plugging the printer into one of the computer's
USB ports.

Download the latest driver from http://hp.com. Install it according to the
instructions.

If the USB port is still undetected, navigate to Control Panel System
Hardware Device Manager and check to see if any of the entries for USB
is "banged out" with yellow ! or red X.

Let us know.

A World of difference between Win98 and XP. You state that "during"
installation of XP you tried to connect the deskjet to your PC? That
is a "No-no". Completely install XP and the ONLY connections to your
PC should be your mouse, keyboard and monitor, NOTHING else. Then, install
the software of your printer, during which time it will notify you when
to connect the printer and turn it on.
Uninstall & reinstall Printer
