Printer port not found

It appears that after some Microsoft up dates my printer on my computer (HP
deskjet) and the printer on a second computer in my home (Canon S300) can no
longer print because the ports are not recognized. There was nothing else
that changed from the last time the printer worked. I have uninstalled and
reinstalled the printers and cleaned up the computers but still no luck. My
son also had the problem with a new Epson printer/scanner and wound up having
to wipe the hard drive in order to be able to install the printer. I would
like to be abel to install the printer without having to wipe the hard drive.

Thanks, Chuck, for taking the time to go into such detail. I have done the
uninstall and cleanup but have not gone to the point of uninstalling the usb
port and controller drivers. I have limited time to spend on technical
things and usually find that accomplishing such tasks takes much longer than
I can spare. I will however attempt to do the uninstalls of the usb port and
controller. I am assuming that I can always use "Go Back" to revert if
things go bad.
Thanks again.
