new hardware errors

I have a HP Deskjet 6980 wirless printer, connected to my desktop PC using
USB, (no wireless card) and also used wireless from a laptop.
It has been fine for about a year but now when I switch on the PC it often
comes upwith "new hardware found - deskjet 6980" despite it already being
installed. The hardware wizard then installs another copy which I keep
deleting and reverting to the original one.
I also see that Device Manager now shows I now have not only the original
USB Composite Device HP6980 under USB controllers, but also 2 deskjet 6980
under IEEE 1284.4 compatible printers, and another under IEEE 1284.4 devices.
All these IEEE1284.4 are shown as (DOT4).
HP help seems useless as their only suggestions are to completly remove all
HP hardware, and all HP files including my HP scanner, by a somewhat
difficult process.
Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is.
